A Journey to the Centre of the Earth
How it was written
Jules Verne wanted to teach real science through thrilling journeys. This was his third novel for his publisher Hetzel.
-
1859A trip to Scotland
Verne visited Edinburgh and saw the old volcanoes Arthur's Seat and Castle Rock. They stayed in his mind.
-
1862Meeting Hetzel
Verne met the publisher Pierre-Jules Hetzel, who signed him for a series of science adventures, the Extraordinary Voyages.
-
1863Reading the science
He used Louis Figuier's new book The World before the Deluge for his fossils and ancient creatures.
-
1864First edition
Hetzel published Voyage au centre de la Terre in Paris.
-
1867Two new chapters
A large illustrated edition added two chapters about prehistory, including a living herd of mastodons.
-
1871In English
The first English version came out in London. It renamed the heroes Professor Hardwigg, Harry and Gretchen. Our audiobook keeps those names.
