Epic
A long poem about heroes and great events.
Blank verse
Lines with a steady rhythm that do not rhyme.
Pandemonium
The devils' capital in Hell. Milton made up the word: "all the demons".
Chaos
The dark, wild space between Heaven and Hell.
Seraph
A high-ranking angel.
Muse
A goddess of inspiration. Milton calls on a heavenly Muse.
Empyrean
The highest Heaven.
Archangel
A chief angel, like Michael or Raphael.
The Fall
Adam and Eve's first disobedience.
Providence
God's care and plan for the world.
